Excellent habitat and proven record hunting grounds for trophy mule deer & elk
Southwest Colorado provides a wide variety of hunting opportunities. Big game hunting throughout the area is legendary; it is one of the most productive grounds in the country.
Many Boone and Crockett records have been brought in by Dolores-based hunters. According to American Hunter, the best bet for mule deer is in Montezuma County.
In addition to trophy mule deer, Southwest Colorado also has one of the largest elk herds in the state. Most big game hunting is done on private lands or in National Forest areas.
Drop camps are available as well as horse and tack rentals, and there are many licensed outfitters/guides in the area. Small game, waterfowl, and Merriam turkey hunting are also available in Mesa Verde Country®.
