Housed in a 1909 historic building, the Cortez Cultural Center contains a wealth of information on archaeology and American Indian culture. The Center's Museum displays interpretive exhibits on the Basketmaker and Pueblo periods of the Ancestral Pueblo people.

Also featured are displays from the Ute Mountain Ute, Pueblo, and Navajo tribes. Traveling exhibits and local artists' work is featured in the art gallery. A mural on the back of the building depicts a traditional pueblo. During the summer Native American Dances are held on the plaza Monday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Storytellers, artists, and historians speak about American Indian cultures at 8:30 p.m. following the dances. A Farmer's Market is held at the Center throughout the summer and fall every Saturday morning. Weekly lectures, slide shows, and music programs are offered September through May.

VISITING the CORTEZ CULTURAL CENTER

The Center is located in Cortez, CO at 25 N. Market (one block off Main Street). During the summer months, "Cultural Programs" banners mark the corner where visitors turn at Market. The Center is open year-round from Monday to Saturday. Volunteers are available to answer questions and make visitors feel at home. There is no fee for visiting the museum or attending the dances and cultural programs, but donations are accepted. For more information on the Cortez Cultural Center, please visit their website. Allow at least an hour to view the exhibits and visit the museum gift shop. Plan for more time if you want to view their extensive video collection.
